StackX Backup is the StackX product for managed backup servers and receivers.
It standardizes and automates backup ingestion, verification, protection, and restoration through a hardened, monitored baseline designed for production operations.
It should not be confused with the backup option included in some managed services: that option may use StackX Backup components internally, but it remains a feature of the subscribed service.
PBS backup is also separate: it protects ScalarCloud VMs at the infrastructure level. On ScalarCloud Public, billed storage already includes the associated PBS backup. In Private Cloud, PBS is attached to the client’s dedicated architecture.
What StackX Backup Provides
StackX Backup Baseline
StackX Backup Baseline| Component | Role |
|---|
| Backup receiver | Server dedicated to receiving and retaining backups |
|---|
| Restricted access | Backup accounts limited to the authorized scope, with no general-purpose shell access |
|---|
| Source restrictions | Network authorization limited to the intended machines or scopes |
|---|
| Structured storage | Clear organization of backups, restoration areas, and separated scopes |
|---|
| Monitoring | Receiver state checks and, on backed-up servers, checks for backup freshness and error-free execution |
|---|
| Restoration | Make files, databases, or content available again according to the validated scenario |
|---|
Do Not Confuse These
Do Not Confuse These| Scope | Clarification |
|---|
| Included backup option | Feature integrated into a managed service without necessarily creating a separate product for the client |
|---|
| StackX Backup | Product used to deploy and operate a managed backup server or receiver |
|---|
| ScalarCloud Public PBS backup | VM backup included with ScalarCloud Public storage billed per GB |
|---|
| Private Cloud PBS backup | VM backup attached to the client’s dedicated private cloud architecture |
|---|
| Replication / Disaster Recovery | Second node, prepared failover, and disaster recovery: this goes beyond backup |
|---|
Usage Models
Usage Models| Model | Use |
|---|
| Internal ScalarX baseline | Component used to operate backups included with selected managed services |
|---|
| Standalone client backup | Product delivered for a client scope that requires an operational backup receiver |
|---|
| Dedicated backup server | Stronger isolation for capacity, sensitivity, compliance, or a specific retention policy |
|---|
| ScalarCloud complement | Application backup in addition to PBS VM backups when operations justify it |
|---|
Security and OperationsAccess, forced commands, and operational checks
Security and Operations| Measure | Benefit |
|---|
| One account per source | Clear separation of backed-up machines and limited permissions |
|---|
| Restricted backup command | The backup account cannot be used to run arbitrary commands |
|---|
| Per-source firewall | Incoming flows remain limited to explicitly defined sources |
|---|
| StackX hardening | Firewall, Fail2ban, audit, system checks, and local monitoring |
|---|
| Anti-enumeration | Reduces unnecessary visibility into backup paths and scopes |
|---|
| Account lifecycle | Controlled access removal, data quarantine before any permanent purge, and explicit deletion |
|---|
| Regular checks | Checks the state of the server, access, and scope consistency |
|---|
